Due to the impact caused by the coronavirus and following Government guidance on social distancing and other health & safety measures, the Society is taking every precaution to ensure the health and wellbeing of all its staff, Fellows, clients and visitors to Burlington House. We are constantly monitoring the situation, but for our initial reopening, the following statement contains the various changes to our operations;

  • Those attending Burlington House will be subject to contactless body temperature checks before being admitted.
  • You will be signed into the visitors book by a member of staff.
  • All Fellows and visitors will be expected to wear face coverings whilst inside the building. Those exempt from wearing them will be asked to confirm this on arrival.
  • All Fellows and visitors should follow directions given by staff whilst at Burlington House and use hand sanitizers provided at various designated points around the building.
  • Unfortunately, we will not be able to provide any catering facilities until further notice.

Library
The Library will reopen on Tuesday 8 September and we are now ready to accept bookings.

To begin with, we will open two days a week, Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 11 am to 4 pm with a lunchtime closure from 1 pm to 2 pm. Fellows wishing to use the Library will need to book a 2-hour slot in advance by emailing the Library ([email protected]) and, if availability allows, they will be able to book consecutive slots. All Library visitors will need to leave the premises whilst the Library is closed between 1-2pm, even if consecutive slots are booked.
Access to the Library will be by the main red staircase only, although use of the lift will still be available for Fellows with mobility constraints.

All users of the Library will be asked to work in an allocated space on the lower level of the Main Library. There will be staff-only access to the basement, the Library office, and the Library’s upper galleries.

Browsing of the collections will not be possible and all users of the Library will be asked to request research materials in advance.

All Library users will be asked not to touch any Library materials, other than the ones they have requested. All Library users will be asked to sign a form agreeing to observe these rules.

All materials that have been handled will be quarantined for 72 hours after use and reader spaces will be either quarantined or cleaned in between uses.
We will continue to assess the service once we reopen, making adjustments where necessary and in accordance with whatever government guidance is in place at the time, and will work towards gradually increasing the number of days the Library is open.

Museum
Access to the Museum at Burlington House will continue to be by appointment only by emailing [email protected].

Fellows Room
Unfortunately, we will not be able to allow Fellows to use the Fellows Room. The Room will be used as an extension of the Museum Room and as a consultation space when research visits are booked.

Ordinary Meetings and Events
Following social distances regulations that are now in place, numbers at our lectures are limited to 32 people and will be allocated on a first come first served basis. Registration for these  places will be released a month in advance of each lecture and can be booked through our website only. However all lectures will be live streamed either via Zoom or directly to our YouTube channel. Both our public and Fellows’ lectures will be streamed and are open to anyone to join us online, numbers to attend via livestream are unlimited. If you have any questions please contact our Communications Manager ([email protected])

Our full event programme and booking information is available on our website here.

For up to date information and charges for room hire bookings please contact our Venue Hire Manager (Jola) at [email protected].

The Society is taking every precaution to ensure the health and wellbeing of all our staff, Fellows, clients and visitors to Burlington House. We will of course do our very best to increase access to our building and Library, but this has to be in line with government guidance. Together we can keep our facilities safe for everyone.

Staff at Burlington House will be continuing to work remotely and will only attend Burlington House as and when required. If you need to speak to a member of staff you can find all email contact details here.
