Explore the remarkable role of Georgian caricature in the equally remarkable Queen Caroline controversy of 1820–21. The trial of the queen for alleged adultery produced many extraordinary images in which Caroline triumphs over her cowardly and conniving enemies, subverting gender and political hierarchies, and giving a voice to the millions of British men and women who supported her cause.

After Brian Hope-Taylor back in 1963 presented his findings at excavations of the Anglian palace site at Yeavering this will now be critically reviewed to the evidence he recovered from, and the interpretations he advanced for both Yeavering and Doon Hill, Dunbar.

Together they have irrevocably shaped our view of the volcano and its victims.

Lady Jane Grey Dudley, ‘the nine-days queen’ of 1553, is unique among English monarchs of the past 550 years in that no authentic portrait of her is known to have survived. This lecture examines some of the better-known images put forward as portraits of Jane Grey, focusing on the recently re-emerged Berry Hill Portrait.

The Proclamation of Accession of Queen Jane (1553) is unique among similar proclamations for its argument supporting the setting aside of Mary and Elizabeth Tudor from the succession. It attempts to persuade of a necessity to preserve monarchy as masculine and implies that Jane’s new husband Guildford Dudley would either rule beside her or in her stead.
