Heritage in Danger: Assessing and Documenting the Impact of the Conflict in Libya
by Professor Anna Leone
The paper will illustrate several projects conducted in Libya to assess and document the impact of the conflict and provide long-term suitable solutions. Through a series of case studies, and illustrating projects in different sites in Libya, the paper will discuss the variety of threats that the conflict brings to the heritage, from impact of the crossfire, to looting, to vandalism and destruction. The analysis will focus on the damage produced by the bullets on the Roman Theatre of Sabratha (UNESCO – World Heritage Site) and on the Roman Mausoleum of Sufet in the Nafusa; on other type of threats in different areas of Libya, and, finally, on issues related to looting and illicit trafficking of Antiquities. The paper will provide an overview of the major problems caused in Libya by the conflict as well as some ideas for an effective long-term management of the Libyan Heritage.
