Hidden Elements: Wiltshire’s Historic Graffiti & Protective Marks

November 1, 2022 @ 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm

LUNCHTIME LECTURE

Hidden Elements: Wiltshire’s Historic Graffiti & Protective Marks

by Tony Hack BA, MA, FSA

Wiltshire Medieval Graffiti Survey was started in 2014 as a vehicle to record the County’s historical graffiti, protective marks & re-used stonework within Wiltshire many remaining historic buildings including manor houses, vernacular & agricultural buildings & churches.

Intended to supplement and share information with existing groups such as the Norfolk Medieval Graffiti Survey started by Matthew Champion, the Wiltshire group went from strength to strength gathering members and making new discoveries throughout the County, building relationships with the Churches Conservation Trust and other interested groups.

They started some high profile work with the National Trust and English Heritage recording the renowned Tithe Barn in Bradford on Avon, Great Chalfield Manor and latterly Lacock Abbey which is proving a wonderful resource due in part to its excellent state of conservation and the ability to date accurately the different phases of construction.

Some of the most interesting work they literally stumbled across at the end of a long day is the folk art at Imber. “The Imber Frieze” as it was termed by Katy Whitaker FSA represents a late medieval hunting scene with high status figures, a horn blower and hounds with such detail that we were able to date accurately due to the clothing type.

Their intention from the outset was to record to a high standard and add to the knowledge of a building. Many of the marks have been discovered using simple lighting techniques and we have expanded this to include Photogrammetry, Reflectance Transformation Imaging & Laser Scanning.

The lecture will comprise of examples of all the above and encompass some of the techniques used to record specific examples.
