DNA and the Anglo-Saxon migration, community, identity, and burial practice AD450-750 IN EXETER
by Dr Duncan Sayer FSA
A recent publication in Nature describes the results of genetic analysis of 280 individuals from 22 early Anglo-Saxon cemeteries. These were compared with 195 additional individuals from contemporaneous sites in continental north-western Europe and Ireland and genome-wide data from more than 750 ancient individuals spanning the Early Bronze Age to the Early Middle Ages. This research has profound implications for our understanding of the early Middle Ages, not just in terms of the impact of migration, but also in revealing the very nature of personal relationships and the foundation of early medieval community. This presentation will describe the genetic research and explore its implications with specific case studies that allow us to explore this period at a national, local and at a personal level.
This event will be both online only.
