Christmas Miscellany and Mulled Wine Reception

December 8, 2022 @ 5:00 pm - 6:30 pm

Join us on 8 December to celebrate the end of the year with our Annual Christmas Miscellany and Mulled Wine Reception.

The meeting will begin with Society business and will be followed by our Christmas Miscellany of papers. Each paper will last 20-25minutes.

Miscellany Of Papers

  • A timber castle drawn on stone: a medieval graffito from the castle at Caen by Dr Edward Impey FSA

In the collection of the Musée de Normandie is a loose ashlar block, used or re-used in the annexes built around the 12th-century donjon of the castle at Caen by Phillip Augustus, bearing a remarkable incised drawing of the early 13th century. The composition and the careful detailing imply an experienced draftsman and one familiar with structural techniques. Its importance lies in its subject – a timber castle, or part of one – and in the details of its elevation and construction, rarely illustrated at the time or available from archaeological evidence. The drawing shows a ringwork or, more probably, a motte, its slopes perhaps revetted in timber, crowned with a timber curtain wall, reached by a bridge of unusual form through a massive cross-braced gate-tower. Within, what is probably an aisled hall. The inclusion of a builders’ hoist, apparently in use, adds an additional aspect to its interest.

  • “A Cabal of jealous, self-interested Men” John Buckler’s blackballing at the Society of Antiquaries by Dr Joshua Mardell

This talk will (re-)introduce the Buckler dynasty of antiquarian architects and artists and introduce a cache of letters belonging to John Buckler (1770-1851), including correspondence with leading cultural figures of the day, from Banks to Britton, which contribute to a more nuanced understanding of antiquarian culture at the time. They predominantly chart Buckler’s three attempts to be elected a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries between 1808 and 1810. He was twice-blackballed owing to issues of religion, professionalism, and factionalism. As the Society’s own historic ballot boxes are soon to be retired from use, it invites reflection on the history of balloting at the Antiquaries. Finally, the talk will briefly introduce two moments akin to “blackballing” – whether professional or historiographical – experienced by the second and third generation scions of the Buckler dynasty.
