Archaeoacoustics and Postpalaeolithic Art

Ordinary Meeting of Fellows (Fellows and Guests Only)

Sounds of Rock Art: Archaeoacoustics and Postpalaeolithic Art in the Western Mediterranean

Lecture by Prof Margarita Díaz-Andreu, FSA, and Dr Tommaso Mattioli.

In this lecture the results of a two-year project on the acoustics of rock art in the Western Mediterranean will be presented. Archaeoacoustic research on schematic rock art sites in Italy, France and Spain have indicated the importance of sound for their location. Several issues will be discussed: the importance of the acoustics of the places chosen to be painted on and, in particular, their potential for enhancing resonance and reverberation and for producing echoes in the selection of sites to be decorated. Issues such  as the possible use of echolocation  – the ability to identify the location from which echoes and reverberations originate – by prehistoric communties will be assessed in the light of results obtained.
