ORDINARY MEETING OF FELLOWS LECTURE

William Bowyer’s Heroica Eulogia of 1567. An Illuminated History of the Earls of Leicester from the Tower Records

by Professor Norman Jones FSA

In 1567 William Bowyer, Keeper of the Records in the Tower of London, oversaw the rapid production of a gorgeous, illuminated manuscript arguing that Robert Dudley, 4th earl of Leicester, should have all of the rights and properties of all previous earls of Leicester going back to Simon de Montfort. Bowyer illustrated them with Latin poetry rehearsing their lives, pictures of the princes, their coats of arms and historical documents. Now HM 160 in the Huntington Library, this manuscript presents a complex puzzle about historical thought, art, and politics in the early Elizabethan years. This lecture will explore Bowyer’s purposes and methods in creating this historical form.
