Our Council in the North: Current Reflections and Future Research Directions at ‘The King’s Manor’, York

November 24, 2022 @ 5:00 pm - 6:00 pm

ORDINARY MEETING OF FELLOWS EVENING LECTURE

Out of London Meeting: York

Our Council in the North: Current Reflections and Future Research Directions at ‘The King’s Manor’, York

by Dr Katherine Giles FSA

The King’s Manor is one of York’s best-known buildings, sitting at the heart of the city’s cultural quarter and home to the University of York since the 1960s. Many members will have attended lectures there, consulted its library and in the past, used its Refectory. But how much do we really know about this building? In this lecture, Kate Giles will present recent research from a pilot project exploring the use of The King’s Manor as the home of the Council of the North, which has brought together a group of early modern historians and architectural historians to reflect on the state of current knowledge, gaps in our understanding, and questions for the future.

Kate Giles (BA, MA, PhD, York) is a buildings archaeologist with a specialism in the recording, archival research and theoretical interpretation of historic buildings. She is particularly interested in communal buildings of the medieval and modern periods, from guildhalls to parish churches, and how we tell their stories in ways that inspire interest and encourage people to visit and care for them today.
