Norwich Castle’s Norman Keep has long been recognised as one of the finest surviving twelfth-century donjons, with an architectural sophistication reflecting its status as a royal palace. Subsequent use as Norfolk’s county gaol and, since 1894, as the county Museum, has led to major losses in its interior spaces. A £13.5 project with major funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund will transform the interior by recreating the Norman interior spaces, build a new medieval gallery in partnership with the British Museum and enable full accessibility to the Keep and modern amenities to adjacent museum spaces. This talk will describe the project and examine the challenges in making such a significant historical and archaeological asset fit for a twenty-first century audience.
