Hans Eworth, a Netherlander in London and Antwerp
July 5 @ 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm
LUNCHTIME LECTURE
Hans Eworth, a Netherlander in London and Antwerp
by Hope Walker
The narrative of Netherlandish painters’ lives and experiences in mid-sixteenth century London has thus far been told frequently in the aggregate. This is primarily because the extant documentary record sometimes contains large gaps that prevent us from producing a more complete picture of individual lives and careers. And while some Netherlander painters in this period occasionally monogrammed or otherwise signed their works, for most painters there are also very few surviving works to which they can, at present, be reasonably linked. These facts complicate the further exploration of lives as well as the attribution of extant pictures. One significant exception to this, however, is found in the life and works of Antwerpian painter Hans Eworth, whose important monogrammed portrait of Queen Mary I is in the Society of Antiquaries collection. In this talk I shall present my latest archival discoveries about the life and works of Hans Eworth in London and Antwerp, the results of which expands what is known about this important painter and his family. I shall also share two new Eworth works that I have discovered, one of which is his only known, extant drawing. And I shall share some of my research into the lives of Eworth and other Netherlander attendance at the Dutch Church in London, Austin Friars, in the mid-sixteenth century in order to highlight broader issues of emigration and transnationalism in Tudor London.
