Join us for a Victorian-themed evening of top entertainment and terrible poetry to celebrate our 150th birthday at Burlington House.
We’ve got a whole host of fun lined up for you. Enjoy rousing performances from pianist and singer Kate Garner, who will get the birthday celebrations going with a parlour singalong featuring a music hall classic to take us back in time. West End historian Rohan McWilliam exposes secrets of the Burlington Arcade in the late nineteenth century and creative writing doctoral student Becky Balfourth helps you create a nineteenth-century-style “Ode to an Antiquary”, inspired by verse from our library and archive collections. Can you create the worst poem of the night? The more unctuous and overblown, the better!
You’ll also have the chance to visit our beautiful Victorian library to admire the original gasoliers and enjoy a display of rarely seen photographs and documents showing key moments in the history of the Society of Antiquaries at Burlington House.
Special guest to be revealed!
Admission is free but numbers are limited, so pre-book a one-hour slot to guarantee entry.
Dress code: Victorian era costumes encouraged (but not required) – big beards and jaunty bonnets! There will be an hourly slot prize for the best dressed over 18s, with a prize of a Fortnum and Mason’s Blanc de Blancs Champagne Magnum!
This event is part of our Sensing History project, funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund.
