Samuel Gale (1682-1754)

Samuel Gale was elected the Society’s first Treasurer and served from 1718 to 1740. A godson of Samuel Pepys he was the official Custom House searcher of imported books and antiquities. He is shown half-length, facing his left, turning his head to his right, wearing a dark brown coat, his white shirt open at the neck.
