Newly available (since October 2011) is the Library’s digitised Subject Index http://subjectindex.sal.org.uk/. The online index is based on scanned images of the cards, searchable by subject heading

This index on circa 570,000 cards contains references to all books and periodical articles accessioned by the Library until 1988 (when we moved to electronic cataloguing). Though it has to be pointed out that journal article coverage from the 1970s onwards is selective (rather than comprehensive). To locate the Index citations in the Library, the user has to retrieve the required (book or periodical) title from the Society’s online library catalogue http://sal.ads.ahds.ac.uk/

The special value of the Subject Index lies in its coverage of older periodical literature.
